Shots | What is the shot showing? | Connotations ( your response) | Denotations what the shot suggests |
Establishing shot | Jays caravan | You wonder why a caravan is just parked in on the street. | This shows that it’s not a very nice place to be as the caravan looks run down and dirty and this makes us think that it is not belonging to anyone wealthy. |
Close up | Of Neil’s face showing how engaged he is in Jays lies | You wonder how Neil can be so stupid the shot is face on so this is focusing on his emotion in his face. You also feel sorry for Neil being so gullible. | That Neil is so intrigued by Jays lies. The close up shows his face and how gullible Neil is. |
Mid shot | Of all the boys sat around the table | This is just giving you the response that it is a friendly atmosphere | That they are all good friends who are combatable in each other’s company and that no one is of more importance of the others as they are all sat around the table at equal heights. |
High angle eye shot | From Jays dad’s eye view | The boys have just been talking about how great they are and then this shot puts them to shame | Showing that Jay’s dad is of more importance because of his age and experiences to life. |
Zoomed mid shot and establishing shot | Of the school sign while the students attend the school | That they have now cut scenes to where they are now at school and it looks like a high quality working school. | That it is a busy school and that they just mingle in with everyone else and they want to stand out but they cannot |
Cutting between two close up shots | Between Simon and Tara while Simon gets into panic when she starts asking him questions | That Simon is in panic and does not know what to say so you feel sorry for him and you don’t want him to embarrass himself | That the conversation is faster than it actually is and creates suspension and panic for the audience. |
Mid shot | Between Will and his mum showing their mother and son relationship | That you see that will is embarrist by his mum hugging him in front of his friends and you feel sorry for him. | That they have a strong relationship because she is reassuring him not to do drugs |
Over the shoulder shot | Of Will looking at the other boys | That will thinks he is better than the other three boys and that he is being brought down by ‘hanging out’ with them. | Showing wills point of view, on how retarded his friends are. |
